Multiple-Resistant Commensal Escherichia Coli from Nigerian Children: Potential Opportunistic Pathogens
نویسندگان
چکیده
Purpose: The antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence traits of 150 strains of Escherichia coli characterized as commensals recovered from faecal samples from pre-school age children in Ile-Ife, Nigeria were evaluated in order to determine their potentials for pathogenicity and their contribution to antibiotic resistance in the community. Methods: The isolates were identified using conventional biochemical methods. The presence or absence of virulence traits was determined using phenotypic and genotypic (polymerase chain reaction) methods. Their susceptibility to antibiotics was determined using the disk diffusion method. Results: Possession of virulence properties including encapsulation (89.3 %), haemolysin production (24.8 %) and colicinogenicity (11.3 %) was detected among the strains and susceptibility of the strains to multiple antibiotics showed that the strains were highly resistant to cefalothin (100 %), streptomycin (94.0 %), tetracycline (92.0 %), and trimethoprim (89.3 %) while resistance to the quinolones was low (3.3 14.0 %). Conclusion: The possession of virulence properties by antibiotic resistant strains of commensal E. coli may enhance their potential as extraintestinal pathogens.

Distribution of pathogenicity island (PAI) markers and phylogenetic groups in diarrheagenic and commensal Escherichia coli from young children
AIM This case-control study investigated the various PAI markers, phylogenetic groups and antimicrobial susceptibility among DEC and commensal E. coli isolates. BACKGROUND Diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) is an emerging agent among pathogens that cause diarrheal diseases and represents a major public health problem in developing countries. The major difference in virulence among DEC patho...
متن کاملAssociations between multidrug resistance, plasmid content, and virulence potential among extraintestinal pathogenic and commensal Escherichia coli from humans and poultry.
The emergence of plasmid-mediated multidrug resistance (MDR) among enteric bacteria presents a serious challenge to the treatment of bacterial infections in humans and animals. Recent studies suggest that avian Escherichia coli commonly possess the ability to resist multiple antimicrobial agents, and might serve as reservoirs of MDR for human extraintestinal pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC) ...
متن کاملDraft Genome Sequences of Antibiotic-Resistant Commensal Escherichia coli
Antimicrobial resistance is a significant public health issue. We report here the draft genome sequences of three drug-resistant strains of commensal Escherichia coli isolated from a single healthy college student. Each strain has a distinct genome, but two of the three contain an identical large plasmid with multiple resistance genes.

Background: Blood stream infection is one of the main causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of aerobic and anaerobic-bacteremia in hospital inpatients with cancer and to determine the antibiotic resistance profile in isolated organisms in Kerman, southeast Iran. Methods: Total of 240 blood cultures from 136 patients w...
